Hi [teacher name],

I was wondering if it would be possible to have a short meeting with you to discuss my poor test results on the Social Studies test. I have reviewed all of my errors, but I still have some questions about the answers for question #4 and #9. In addition, I would really appreciate your advice on how I can improve my study habits so that I can get a better score in the future.
Thank you so much for your time. Looking forward to your help.

Social Studies

Fail Forward

During these chaotic COVID times, it is not surprising that some students are struggling with their studies. Failing an important assignment or exam is an extremely upsetting experience for the student and their parents, especially for senior high school students who need top marks for university entrance. Sometimes even the brightest students can get complacent about their studying and not put in the full effort. However, when this results in a poor grade, it can be the shock that finally forces them to take their studies more seriously. When a student receives a low grade, it is important to realize that all is not lost; in fact, sometimes failing at a task can be a blessing in disguise as it can provide a powerful learning opportunity. This is precisely the idea behind the concept of “failing forward”. Mistakes are an inescapable part of life and the students who learn how to quickly repair and recover from them will reap benefits in both their school and eventual work life. What follows are important strategies to follow to move forward from a failure.

1) Thorough Analysis of What Went Wrong
Take the time to carefully find all of the reasons for the less than satisfactory result. Students must learn to accept full responsibility for their marks and for devising a strategy to improve them. This sense of ownership includes carefully reviewing each marked test and assignment for any difficulties experienced with the material and study habits. Carefully reviewing mistakes is a valuable approach to learning how to do better next time. Students should be able to precisely identify the areas where they went wrong and their weaknesses in content and study habits. This is particularly helpful for the next step – speaking to the teacher about the results asking for targeted help.

2) Meet with the Teacher – But Respect Their Time and Come Prepared
After reviewing the marked coursework and carefully compiling a list of questions and comments, students can arrange a time to speak with their teacher. This step of preparing in advance is critical as there is nothing more irritating to a busy teacher than a student who shows up demanding a better grade or passively claiming that they ‘don’t understand the topic’. It is extremely rare that a teacher ever changes a grade so pushing for that just wastes time and could negatively influence the teacher’s impression of the student. However, a teacher will be much more open to providing helpful advice and assistance when the student comes prepared with specific questions about the class material, the test question or just questions about how to prepare better in the future. When the student comes prepared with their specific questions and notes, not only can the teacher give better help, but it also helps build a more meaningful connection with the teacher. Although a teacher is usually easy to approach before or after class for questions, if you want to have a serious discussion, it would be most respectful to send a short email requesting a meeting. Here is a sample email to request a meeting:

4) One Mistake Does Not Ruin Everything
Students need to be reminded that poor marks can be overcome and do not mean that the entire course is ruined for them. It is important to keep perspective that one bad mark does not make them a bad student overall. Bad grades can be improved, and study habits can be strengthened to dramatically improve performance. Most students will experience a bad result at least once during their time at school but taking immediate action to rectify the problem will keep results on track. Indeed, it is not uncommon for teachers to ignore a single bad mark if all other assignments and tests have been exceptional. The key for students is to not let a poor mark make them emotional and disinterested in trying anymore. The poor test score or assignment mark can’t be changed, but students can always make the choice to study harder, better, and score higher on all future assignments to come.

Failure is a normal part of life, even if it is not talked about very much. In fact, mistakes often can lead to the biggest insights and inventions. Students need to know that whenever they stumble, they have an opportunity to learn valuable information about themselves and their study habits that need modification. As the saying goes, it is not how many times you fall, but how many times that you get back up again that really matter in the end.
