Fitting in for Success

The most basic human desire is to feel like you belong. Fitting in is important.
Simon Sinek, American Author

Covid19 has caused so many unexpected negative consequences unrelated to the physical disease itself. The necessary social distancing and isolating has reduced and the removed opportunities for students to come together and build bonds of friendship with each other. In their determined pursuit of academic success for students, parents and educators have solely fixated on the resumption of courses. However, lost in the hustle for courses and top grades is the understanding of students’ fundamental need to feel like they fit in with their peers. Indeed, in the socially competitive world of high school, having a friend and ally is critically important for well-being. An article on the topic in the Review of Economic Studies, showed that “socially active students tend to achieve better outcomes at school and beyond as being connected in a social network significantly increases one’s academic performance.” Even though students know that doing well in their courses is important for their future, having friends and feeling like they fit in with the other students at school is often a very worrying distraction for them. For international students, their concerns about belonging and making friends are complicated even more by cultural differences.

Building friendships at school is so important, yet it has never been more difficult. The rise in screen time and smartphone use has drastically decreased in-person interactions. In addition, students do not spend as much time as they used to in un-structured time playing outside in the fresh air and in the community centres. This has been made much worse due to the pandemic and isolating at home. Although texting and online social networks can help maintain friendships when apart, a 2012 Stanford University study of 3,461 girls ages 8 to 12 found those who spent a lot of time multitasking online had fewer and poorer-quality friendships.

Having friends helps buffer students from stress, loneliness, teasing and abuse by peers. Children with good friends tend to be kinder and friendlier and have a better reputation. They also have less depression and anxiety through adolescence and beyond, research shows. Friends also play an important role in studying. Students who have friends that prepare exams together, normally perform a lot better than students who study by themselves or have less of a social network. Sociologists from ETH Zurich examined how social connections among students influenced their exam results. Their results showed that friendships are just as important as self-motivation and discipline in achieving better academic results.

There is nothing more heartbreaking for educators and parents than being faced with a student who is in tears and suffering due to their lack of friends and difficulties fitting in. Fortunately, there are some actions that a parent can take to help their children overcome their social hurdles and gain the communication skills, confidence and social intelligence needed to fit in at school and in their future workplace.

1.Be a role model.
Every interaction with a friend, neighbour or family member is a chance for parents to teach their child how to socialize with others in different social situations. Children are not born with social skills and must learn from their parents how to interact with their friends. Parents can help prepare them to interact successfully with peers. Parents can demonstrate, by their own behavior, how to meet people and talk to them, to cooperate with others and to ask for favors. Parents can teach how to win or lose well, to apologize and accept apologies and how to be patient, respectful, and considerate. Most importantly, parents can help their child learn how to be the type of person others like to be around.

2.Observe and talk.
It can be helpful for parents to observe how their children socialize at school and at home and ask them questions about any differences in behaviour. Also, by observing their body language, parents can see how well they maintain eye contact and friendly body posture when interacting with others. One of the most effective strategies is for parents to spend time having a relaxing conversation with their child, not for giving instructions or lecturing, but just for time to talk about the day’s events. Talking with your child will not only help strengthen your relationship, but it will also let him practice the especially important social skill of holding a conversation.
3.Share etiquette, social skills, and the unwritten rules of culture.
Parents need to teach their children how to handle different social situations, so they know how to act appropriately. Parents need to teach their children about all the unwritten rules in society that govern so many interactions in daily life. Breaking this unwritten code of conduct can lead to embarrassing or awkward situations for international students and their parents. In fact, this is one of the main reasons that we compiled our daily guide to local life and culture, Everyday Vancouver. In our many years of working with adult newcomers and international students to Vancouver, we have seen firsthand the complications and misunderstandings that can result from not knowing these societal norms. Helping your child understand the expected local social etiquette and expectations can help acclimatize them to life here and improve their chances of fitting in and building their network.

4.Encourage social opportunities.
Provide their children with opportunities to spend time with other students. Invite other children to the house to play and let children participate in clubs, classes or teams. For older students, the home should be inviting so that they will want to have friends over. Parents can also encourage their teenagers to form study groups as the Zurich researchers found that friendships can naturally develop from spending time together studying and supporting each other.

5.Reflect on Social Situations.
Parents can teach their children the habit of reflecting on their social interactions and consider ways of handling them differently next time. Also, children need be taught how to manage negative feelings and solve problems., which are important skills in getting along with others.
