⊙ TV에 관한 어휘
얼마 전 한 세계적인 잡지에서 20세기의 10대 발명품을 선정한 기사를 읽은 적이 있다.
필자는 당연히 컴퓨터가 1위를 차지할 것으로 생각했지만 예상과 달리 컴퓨터는 2위에 그친 반면 텔레비전이 1위에 선정된 것을 보고 TV가 끼친 영향이 참으로 크다는 사실을 새삼스럽게 깨닫게 되었다.
TV는 television， 혹은 TV와 같은 정식 명칭으로 쓰이기도 하지만 다른 말로 tube로 표현하기도 한다. 한국말로도 TV를 바보상자라 말하곤 하는데 영어에서 TV를 부정적인 대상으로 묘사하는 어휘로 boob tubes가 있다.
하루 종일 소파에 앉아서 TV나 보는 한심한 사람을 couch potato라고 말하며 TV의 채널을 고정하는 것은 tune in to로 표현한다.
Too many Koreans are couch potatoes.
→ 하루 종일 TV나 보고 시간을 보내는 한국인이 너무 많다.

→ 몇몇 소녀들이 TV 앞에 죽치고 앉아 있다.

* 참고로 미국에서 TV를 보다 보면 어린이나 청소년들이 시청하기에 부적절한 프로그램이 방영되기 직전에 다음과 유사한 형태의 경고성 문구를 많이 접하게 된다.

⊙ 아마존, 밴쿠버에서 1천명 새로 뽑는다
세계적인 전자상거래 업체인 아마존이 밴쿠버에서 무려 1천 명의 직원을 새로 채용한다는 뉴스가 나왔다. 앞으로 밴쿠버가 캐나다 최고의 IT의 거점도시가 된다는 전망이 많이 나오고 있는 것과 궤를 같이 하는 소식이다.
향후에 밴쿠버에서 엔지니어링이나 컴퓨터 관련 학과나 인력이 많이 필요하다는 뉴스는 계속 나오고 있다.
밴쿠버 주민들에게는 당연히 좋은 소식이라는 생각이다. 자녀의 진로결정에도 크게 고려할만한 사항이 될 수 있겠다.
