영화 좋아하시는 분들 많죠? 저도 영화를 참 즐기는 사람인데요. 안 좋은 일 때문에 마음이 뒤숭숭한 분들을 위해 웃을 수 있는 내용 하나 올려봅니다.
캐나다 오기 전에 한국에서 공부할 때 명동에 있는 한 외국어학원에서 직장인들에게 ‘스크린 영어’를 가르친 적이 있었는데 그때 학생들에게 수업했던 내용 중의 하나를 재미로 올려봅니다.
‘헐리우드 영화의 법칙’이라는 내용의 자료인데 제목 그대로 영화를 보면 맨날 뻔하게 나오는 장면들만 설명해 놓은 유머러스한 글들입니다. 참고로 이 내용으로 수업을 하면 학생들이 다 뒤집어졌던 기억이 나네요.
원문은 moviecliche.com이라는 사이트에서 발췌했고 해석은 거의 의역입니다. 그냥 재미로 보시되 올려진 영어 원문도 함께 참고하시면 영어공부도 될 수 있을 거라는 생각이 듭니다.
<헐리우드 영화의 법칙 – 영화에 나오는 컴퓨터의 법칙 >
• Movie character never make typing mistakes.
→ 영화 속의 인물은 절대로 오타를 치지 않는다.
• Corollary: you can gain access to any information you want by simply typing “ACCESS ALL OF THE SECRET FILES” on any keyboard
→ 키보드로 단순히 “모든 비밀 파일에 접속” 이라고 치기만 하면 어떤 종류의 정보라도 다 얻을 수 있다.
• Likewise, you can infect a computer with a destructive virus by simply typing “UPLOAD VIRUS”
→ 마찬가지로 단지 “바이러스 주입”이라고 타이핑하기만 하면 치명적인 바이러스를 컴퓨터에 감염시킬 수 있다.
• A hacker can get into the most sensitive computer in the world eating hamburger or sandwich and surely guess the secret password in three tries after two wrong guesses.
→ 영화속의 해커는 세계에서 가장 보안이 철저한 컴퓨터라 하더라도 햄버거나 샌드위치를 먹으면서 쉽게 침투할 수 있다. 또한 암호를 입력하라는 내용이 나오면 반드시 두 번은 꼭 틀린 후에 세번째 시도에서 암호를 찾아낸다.
• Laptops, for some strange reason, always seem to have amazing real- time video phone capabilities and the performance of a CRAY Supercomputer.
→ 이유는 알 수 없지만 영화속에 나오는 노트북컴퓨터는 놀라운 성능의 실시간 비디오 폰 기능을 갖추고 있으며 슈퍼컴퓨터와 같은 엄청난 처리속도를 지니고 있다.
• When a good guy is looking at an image on the computer, he/she immediately spots an unobvious obscure character and says, Wait! Who’s that? Zoom in on him. Then a box is drawn around the bad guy’s head, and that little square magically turns from low quality into extremely high quality. After that, the good guy exclaims, That’s ____! He works for ____!, and the group quickly leaves.
→ 주인공이 컴퓨터를 통해 사진을 검색하는 도중, 구석에 있는 한 흐릿한 인물을 보게 되면 그는 꼭 다음과 같이 외친다. “잠깐만 이 사람이 누구지? 확대해봐.”
그럼 박스 하나가 그 악당의 얼굴위에 오게 되고 그 작은 사진은 낮은 해상도의 희미한 얼굴에서 기적적으로 초고해상도의 뚜렷한 얼굴로 확대되어 보여지게 된다. 그 후에 주인공은 소리친다. “이 놈은 ~에서 일하는 녀석이야..” 그리고 그 팀은 모두 재빨리 그 곳을 떠난다.
• computer transfering a file too slowly? simply repeat the words ‘come on, come on’ in an anxious voice, & the giant blue doanloading bar will finish.
→ 만일 컴퓨터가 파일을 너무 천천히 전송한다면 간절한 목소리로‘come on, come on’이라고만 반복하라. 그러면 곧 전송이 끝난다.
• Any satellite or other surveillance photo equiptment will be able to mysteriously add pixels until a given image is sharpened enough to discover the identity of the villian(ess). Usually this is done by a glasses-wearing technician by a single keystroke after being asked Can you sharpen this up a little bit? by the hero. The hero will never ask why didn’t you show me the sharpened version of the image first instead of making me ask for it? It only took one keystroke, for god’s sake.
→ 인공위성이나 그 밖의 검색 장비는 땅위에서 찍힌 악당의 모습을 똑똑히 식별할 수 있을 때까지 화면해상도를 증가시키는 신비로운 장치를 가지고 있다. 일반적으로 이러한 작업은 안경을 낀 한 기술자에 의해서 행해지는데, 주인공이 “사진을 조금만 더 선명하게 할 수 없어?”라고 요청하면 그 안경낀 기술자가 키보드를 단 한번만 두드려 주면 흐릿한 화면은 순식간에 엄청나게 깨끗한 고해상도 화면으로 바뀌게 된다. 그 기술자는 주인공이 요청하기 전에는 절대로 먼저 선명한 화면을 제공해 주지 않는다. 왜 그런지는 알 수 없다.
• Every little boy can hack any top secret database he wants without turning on the computer or connecting into the net. kids can break unbreakable code in their head.
→ 모든 꼬마들은 자신이 원하는 모든 극비 사항을 해킹할 능력을 가지고 있다. 심지어 컴퓨터가 꺼진 상태에서 인터넷에 연결하지도 않은 채로도 해킹이 가능한 존재들이 바로 꼬마들이다. 영화속의 아이들은 또한 그 어떤 암호도 다 깰 수 있다.
• If you are a computer whiz, than you type while saying the words at the exact same time you’re typing it while online, like I – am – fine, how – are – you – today? – Let’s – play – a – game. I don’t know whether they need a speech class or a typing class.
→ 만일 당신이 컴퓨터 전문가라면 키보드를 타이핑하면서 꼭 입으로 똑 같은 단어를 중얼거린다. 예를 들어서 “나는- 지금- 아주- 좋아.- 너는- 오늘- 어때? 우리 게임이나 할까” 하면서 입으로 꼭 타이핑하는 글자를 따라한다. 컴퓨터를 배우기 위해서는 연설수업이 필요한지 타이핑 수업이 필요한지 헷갈린다.
• Passwords are always simple words which are related on the file. For example hacker wants to open file which contains info about chemical weapon and the password is poison.
→ 암호들은 언제나 그 파일과 관련이 되는 단순한 단어로 구성되어 있다. 예를 들어서 해커가 화학무기에 대한 정보를 담고 있는 파일을 열 때 찾아낸 암호는 “poison” 이다.
• Any large amounts of data or complete contents of a laptop, can be saved on an ordinary USB drive.
→ 아무리 큰 양의 데이터라 해도 일반적인 USB 드라이브에 다 저장될 수 있다.
• teenage hackers always keep their hair long, & ride a skateborad/rollerblades. sometimes these super cool kids keep a walkie-talkie connection with their best friends.
→ 10대 해커들은 항상 긴 머리를 가지고 있으며 스케이트 보드나 인라인을 타고 다닌다. 때때로 이 해커들은 워키토키를 통해 친구들과 통화한다.
• If a supercomputer is made too powerful, it will eventually become self- conscious and want to destroy all life in the universe.
→ 만일 슈퍼컴퓨터가 너무 강력하게 만들어졌다면, 곧 그 슈퍼컴은 자아를 인식하게 되고 모든 인간을 멸종시키려 할 것이다.
• Hackers can get into any system, no matter how difficult it’s supposed to be. Usually they look at the screen and smirk, then type a few keys, then mutter some insulting comment (Better luck next time, slugheads!). They never get caught unless betrayed by a friend.
→ 해커들은 아무리 어려운 체계로 되어 있는 그 어떤 컴퓨터 시스템에도 들어갈 수 있다. 해커들은 보통 컴퓨터 모니터를 보며 실실 쪼갠다. 그리고 몇 번 타이핑하면서 저질스런 말을 중얼거린다. (예: 다음번에는 잘 하란 말이야. 멍청이들 같으니…후후) 그들은 동료에게 배신당하기 전까지는 절대로 잡히지 않는다.
• The monitor acts as a projector, so you can see in a person’s face, what he’s doing on the computer, literally.
→ 컴퓨터 모니터는 프로젝트와 같은 기능을 가지고 있다. 그래서 컴퓨터 치는 사람의 얼굴을 보면 모니터에 나오는 내용들이 반사되어 비친다.
• everything can be found on the internet, from newspapers that date back 50 years to blueprints of any building in town to anybody’s personal records
→ 인터넷에는 모든 정보가 다 들어있다. 50년 전에 나온 신문기사에서부터 작은 마을에 있는 건물들의 설계도, 심지어 모든 사람의 개인기록까지 다 찾을 수 있다.
• If the hero listens to his answering machine and one important message is unexpected then he usually has two very short messages on the tape before, one spoken by a man, one by a women. “Here’a John! I see you tomorrow at eight.”…. beep … “This is Sallieeeeee! I’ll call again later.” … beep …. and then finally “Ahhhh! The killer is …..”. If however the message is expected be sure that it will be the first one on the tape.
→ 주인공이 전화의 자동응답기를 무심코(별 기대 없이) 들을 때면 반드시 중요한 메시지가 튀어나오는데, 그 앞에는 꼭 매우 짧은 두 개의 메시지가 녹음되어 있다. 하나는 남자로부터 온 메시지고 하나는 여자로부터 온 메시지인데 주로 내용이 다음과 같다. “나 존이야. 내일밤 여덟시에 보자.” 삐… “ 나 샐리야.. 나중에 걸께..” 삐… 그리고 드디어 “으.. 범인은 바로…..”하는 메시지가 나온다. 그러나, 만일 주인공이 무언가 중요한 메시지가 있을 것으로 확신하고 테이프를 들을 때면 항상 맨 처음에 그 메시지가 녹음되어 있다.
