⊙ 아슬아슬한 상황과 관련된 표현
말을 하다 보면 긴박하거나 아슬아슬한 상황을 설명해야 하는 경우가 많이 있지만 막상 이러한 표현들을 영어로 제대로 구사하는 사람은 흔하지 않은 것 같다.
한국말로는 ‘간발의 차이로’와 같은 말을 영어로는 by the skin of one’s teeth나 by a whisker처럼 표현하는 경우가 종종 있다. 이빨의 표면(teeth의 skin)이나 수염(whisker)의 차이(by)이니 어느 정도로 적은 차이인지 감이 잡힐 것이다.
영화로도 소개된 바 있던 cliffhanger는 말 그대로 벼랑에 매달려 있는 긴박하고 아슬아슬한 상황을 묘사할 때 쓰인다. 또한 재미있는 말로 close shave가 있는데 이 역시 근소한 차이로 위험한 상황을 벗어났을 때 미국인들이 사용하는 표현 중의 하나다.
He escaped from the attack by the skin of his teeth.
→ 그는 공격으로부터 아슬아슬하게 탈출할 수 있었다.
Last time she raced against the Japanese，she won by a whisker.
→ 지난번에 그녀는 그 일본인과 경주를 해서 간발의 차이로 이겼다.
We only received the official signatures at the eleventh hour.
→ 우리는 가까스로 공식적인 서명을 받을 수 있었다.
We got there just in the nick of time.
→ 우리는 아슬아슬하게 그 곳에 도착할 수 있었다.
They won the game by a narrow margin.
→ 그들은 근소한 차이로 그 경기에서 승리했다.
The runners were coming to the finish line neck and neck.
→ 주자들은 결승선을 거의 동시에 달려 들어오고 있었다.
The doctor says that it’s touch－and－go whether Mary will be okay.
→ 의사는 메리가 좋아질지 여부는 확실하지 않으며 매우 아슬아슬한 상황이라고 말했다.
We had to make a split－second decision.
→ 우리는 매우 신속한 결정을 내려야 했다.
The girl came near being run over by a truck.
→ 그 소녀는 거의 트럭에 치일 뻔했다.
I didn’t do very well on the test，but I think I got by.
→ 나는 시험을 아주 잘 보지는 못했으나 그런대로 해 낸 것 같다.
I had a close shave this morning. I almost broke my arm.
→ 오늘 아침에 큰일 날 뻔 했다. 거의 내 팔이 부러질 뻔 했다.
The race was a real cliff－hanger.
→ 그 경기는 정말로 손에 땀을 쥐게 했다.
⊙ 정점/절정과 관련된 표현
The prime minister has reached the pinnacle of national power.
→ 그 수상은 국가 권력의 정점에 도달했다.
House prices will reach an all－time high.
→ 집값이 사상 최고 수준에 도달할 것이다.
TV commercials on prime time costs millions of dollars.
→ 시청률이 가장 높은 시간대의 TV광고비는 수백만 달러에 달한다.
The 19th century was the Golden Age of England.
→ 19세기는 영국의 황금기였다.
She had the time of her life.
→ 그녀는 인생 최고의 시간을 보냈다.
The opera singer died of cancer in the prime of his life.
→ 그 오페라 가수는 전성기 때 암으로 사망했다.
I don’t think his day is over.
→ 나는 그의 전성기가 끝났다고 생각하지 않는다.
In 2005， the actress was at the zenith of her achievement.
→ 그 여배우는 2005년에 최전성기를 보냈다.
⊙ 기타 시간과 관련된 일상 표현들
시간에 관련된 표현들을 살펴보았는데 특별히 소제목으로 분류하기에는 범위가 너무 작은 어휘들을 상황에 맞게 정리해 보았다. 가급적이면 우리가 학교에서 ‘숙어’로 배운 것에서는 다루지 않았으면서도 실용성이 높은 말들을 모아 두었으니 잘 참고해서 익혀두자.
I shall work for the company for the present.
→ 나는 당분간은 그 회사에서 일할 것이다.
I will stay at the hotel for the time being.
→ 나는 당분간은 그 호텔에서 머물 것이다.
The economic crisis will be over before long.
→ 경제위기는 곧 끝날 것이다.
