사실 기고는 한국전에 대한 나의 관심과 열정을 표현하고 있습니다. 그 내용은 지난 20년 동안 내가 해 온 일에 대한 개인적인 경험담입니다.
그리고 시간이 흘러도 사람들이 전쟁의 참담함과 참전용사들의 희생을 기억해야 한다고 생각합니다.
한인타운인 코퀴틀람의 노스로드에는 대형 한인마트가 길 양쪽으로 자리잡고 있어 캐네디언의 시선에서 눈에 띕니다. 또 한인타운에는 많은 한식당, 한국스러운 커피 숍, 빵집 등 소규모 비지니스가 밀집해 있습니다.
그런데 얼마전부터 이와 비슷하게 랭리시와 랭리타운쉽에 대형 한인마트와 한식당이 자리잡아가고 있습니다. 이 프레이저 벨리 도시는 한인 사회를 환영하고 있다고 생각하는데 그 이유는 바로 가평석과 가평전투기념관입니다.
랭리타운쉽 소재의 데릭더블데이 수목원에 가평석이 우뚝 서 있습니다. 가평전투는 1951년 4월 23일 한국전 당시 병력이 5배 많은 중공군 공세를 캐나다군을 포함한 영연방 제27사단이 3일간 밤낮으로 막아낸 역사적인 전투입니다. 캐나다 군은 이 전투에서 10명 전사, 23명 부상이라는 큰 인명피해를 입었지만 캐나다군 역사상 가장 영광스러운 전투로 기록되고 있습니다. 캐나다 보병대대는 가평 계곡 기슭에 있는 677 번 언덕을 점령했습니다. 대대 병사들이 결단력과 용기로 필사적으로 싸운 곳입니다. 치열한 야간 전투가 끝날 무렵, 우리의 대대는 압도적인 역경에 맞서 승리했습니다. 그들은 2 차 세계 대전에서 낡은 볼트 액션 소총과 브렌 경기관총으로 승리했고 수류탄이 언덕을 굴러 내려갔습니다.
가평전투의 승리로 적이 더 남쪽으로 이동하는 것을 막고 서울의 탈환을 막았다고 평가되고 있습니다.
이 전투로 캐나다 참전용사 제럴드 에반스 상병을 포함해 10 명을 잃었습니다. 에반스 상병은 한국 전쟁에서 사망 한 브리티시 컬럼비아 인 36 명 중 한 명이었습니다. 그의 이름은 버나비 센트럴 파크의 평화 기념비 뒤에 있는 기념 벽에서 찾을 수 있습니다.
캐나다참전용사들은 그들의 희생과 용기를 인정받아 미국에서 대통령 표창을 받았으며, 대한민국 대통령 표창도 받았습니다. 그리고 오늘날까지 패트리샤 공주 2 대대 캐나다 경보병 대원은 교복에 작은 파란색 직사각형 단위 표창장을 자랑스럽게 달고 있습니다.

The Republic of Korea’s Presidential Unit Citation
I ’ve been very fortunate and honoured by this newspaper to write a few articles. My stories usually revolve around my passion for history and the Korean War. These ideas come from my own experiences of things I have done over the last twenty years. Those experiences are stored somewhere in the back of my conscious and every once in a while, I think about them, and write from this jumbled mess of random thoughts. These are things I have carried around unknowingly for a long time, and they are important to me and I hope they are of some value to you.
It has always fascinated me from an outsider’s point of view to visit the shopping area that lies on both sides of North Road in Coquitlam. Two large grocery stores are at the center of Korea Town and Hanin Village. There are countless restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, and other small businesses. These two shopping plazas form the gathering place and hub of the Lower Mainland’s Korean community.
There are other Korean restaurants and grocery stores spread throughout other cities and places, as far east as the Township of Langley and even beyond. This Fraser Valley city seems to openly welcome the Korean community. One remarkable gesture and visible proof of Langley’s warm welcome is the installation of a Kapyong Battle memorial.
Located at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum, there is a large stone from Gapyeong County which commemorates the valiant stand of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. In April 1951, this Canadian infantry battalion occupied a Hill identified as 677 at the foot of the Kapyong Valley. It is where soldiers of the battalion desperately fought with determination and courage. At the end of the fierce night battle, our “Patricia’s” stood victorious against overwhelming odds. They had won with old bolt action rifles and Bren light machine guns from the Second World War and hand grenades rolled down the hill.
Their stand stopped the enemy from moving further south and prevented the recapture of Seoul.
The Canadian’s lost 10 men including Corporal Gerald Evans. Corporal Evans was one of only 36 British Columbians who died in the Korean War. His name can be found on the memorial wall behind the Ambassador of Peace Monument in Burnaby Central Park.
In recognition of their bravery, they were awarded a Presidential Unit Citation from the United States and they also received something that is equally as prestigious but less well known, the Republic of Korea’s Presidential Unit Citation. To this very day, each member of the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry proudly wears a small blue rectangular Unit Citation badge on their uniform.
Next year is the 70th anniversary of this important Korean War battle and I am quite sure the Township of Langley and members of the Korean community will organize a fitting tribute to mark this historic day. The Gapyeong Stone Korean War Memorial in the Derek Doubleday Arboretum stands tall as a lasting monument to a battalion of brave men and symbol of friendship between two communities.
